June 15, 22013 brought out much of Nikiski and folks from Kenai and Soldotna. Along with our Nikiski "Fun In The Midnight Sun" event there was also the ribben cutting ceremony for our new playground. We had lots of folks come and participate in the many activities. Our own Nikiski Community Library had a booth and we gave away over 125 books! From my viewpoint at the library booth I was able to see several folks get a good dunking in the dunk tank and watched lots of children playing on the new playground. With snow melting everyone seems to be gearing up for a great spring and summer. Winter was the time to dream and sketch out summer ideas. Folks are dusting off those sketches of new decks, flower or vegetable gardens and cleaning out their green houses. Seedlings have already been planted soaking up the sun that's beginning to shine more each day. I was at Nikiski North Star Elementary school the other day and I saw lots of seedlings growing in classrooms. Looks like the gardening bug has bit the younger generation. I also noticed that the North Peninsula Recreation Center is again sponsoring the annual Hershey Track & Field games. One might not be aware of this but the Hershey Track & Field games are the largest youth sports program of its kind in North America, with over 400,000 kids participating throughout the United States last year. Ms. Tammy Berdahl is the leader of the Hershey event for our Nikiski youth. Each year she does a tremendous job getting kids excited to become physically active. It's a great program that jumps start these kids for a summer full of physical activities. Let's keep our Nikiski children physically fit and healthy!
