February, 2011 is Love of Reading Month. Our elementary school, Nikiski North Star Elem. (NNS) will sponsor it's annual One School, One Book project.
This year the school has selected the book, Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White.
To participate in this nationwide program, an entire school community reads the same book simultaneously—parents to children, older children to the family, and school staff to spouses. Each morning, students try to answer trivia questions announced over the school's public address system from the previous day's reading. The program is designed to create a schoolwide "buzz" about books. During the month of February each child at NNS will receive a copy of Trumpet of the Swan. At the end of the month there will be a community movie night where the movie, Trumpet of the Swan, will be showcased.
This is the third year that Nikiski North Star has enjoyed the One School, One Book program with its students and their families. We think it is a wonderful way to celebrate Love of Reading Month, and we'd like to thank you all for joining us on this reading adventure!

Here's what to do...
* Read the assigned chapter(s) each night with your children. This should be a family event.
* Talk about what you read. This book offers many opportunities for thoughtful discussions about friendship and being the best you can be. You'll learn about the Red Rocks Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Canada and different areas of the United States. Of course you'll learn about the amazing trumpeter swan.
