There's
a new Facebook group and it's
called the Nikiski Community Action Group. When you have some time log onto Facebook (www.facebook.com) and check this out. This group was formed in light of the recent increase in theft in our Nikiski Community. The Nikiski Council held several meetings and many citizens turned out to discuss this very sensitive topic. There are currently 210 members and it seems to keep growing. If you are concerned about Nikiski and wanting to keep current on what is happening with the crime/theft issues join this group and stay "in the know".

How We Came To Be
Dreams for a library in Nikiski have been quite some time in the making. For years I've seen, as a public school librarian, children in Nikiski wanting to go to a library to borrow books. During school hours when the school library was open and staffed they would be in luck. If they wanted a book after hours, on a weekend, Christmas break, and even during the summer they would have to depend on getting a ride into Kenai to visit their library. Being a public school librarian I often had students asking for a library here in our community.
I retired from teaching in 2009 and this is when library plans began to take shape. On a winter day over Christmas break my sister and I took our children to the pool to swim. Rachel Parra, the Recreation Director of the North Peninsula Recreation Area is the wonderful person that listened patiently to me that day and later gave the O.K. to begin to make my dream come true. Interestingly, it wasn't until about a year ago that I found out that some other Nikiski folks had been wanting a library and it was an item on a community wish list.
Starting with the new year in 2010 we were provided a room in the Nikiski Recreation Center and the Nikiski Community Council gave us some seed money to get things rolling. We bought a library automation system, some books from betterworldbooks.com and put the word out about donations. Well let me tell you, the Nikiski community has been wonderful is supplying us with a steady flow of donated books.
We quickly outgrew our tiny room and we were able to move into a room a bit bigger. North Peninsula Rec. Center staff cleaned up the room, installed shelves and behold it started to look like a library. With the help of Tammy Berdahl and every single staff member at the Rec. Center the library dream has come true.
Please stop by some time and see what we've become. We are tiny but mighty!
